I almost deleted this post. It’s been sat in my I almost deleted this post. It’s been sat in my drafts for a few weeks.

But my 10-year-old told me about a task she’s been set on the first day of school to write about her summer. And I realised it wasn’t just me feeling sad we’d not had a big adventure. She said she’d had to make fun stuff up as her summer sounded boring compared to her classmates 🫠

I had a pang of mum guilt. But not all summers are made the same and we’ve been so lucky to have some epic ones in recent years. Both this summer and last summer were crazy busy but very, very different.

Last summer we had one of the most amazing holidays of our lives (so far) in Vietnam.

This summer we have been tackling the gargantuan task of relocating back to the UK from Oman.

I’d take adventures over life admin any day but it’s been wonderful to reconnect with family and friends, spend time in the fresh air and know we’re on the cusp of all kinds of new.

How did this summer compare to 2024 for you?

Gah! This summer 🫠🤯🤩 If you saw my stori Gah! This summer 🫠🤯🤩

If you saw my stories the other day you’ll know that I’ve been feeling all the overwhelm about moving back to the UK, getting set for our new routine and trying to fit in some fun around a mountain of life admin.

It’s meant I’ve not posted to my grid for a month 🫣

But I finally feel like my brain is clearing.

Last week the girls went back to school - 68 days after finishing in Oman - and now in lessons 100 miles apart. ICYMI our 12-year-old is now boarding so she has continuity when we move again in two years.

It was such a relief we were reunited this weekend and they were happy and full of stories of new routines and friends.

I know there will be bumps for us all as we find our new normal but I’m looking forward to starting next week with a bit more energy.

Maybe I’ll even share some travel inspo šŸ¤”šŸ˜†

What new routines has September brought for you?

This is the most asked question since we’ve arri This is the most asked question since we’ve arrived home in the UK.

Oman and our experience there is difficult to sum up. It was a country we knew nothing about that became EVERYTHING to us.

The shifting landscapes, life-changing adventures and deep friendships will forever be part of us and who we are.

It tested our courage, introduced us to a rich culture based on trust and kindness, and re-shaped our view of the world.

The simple answer is: we loved it šŸ„°šŸ‡“šŸ‡²

This reel shares some of our favourite places and experiences: the wadis, mountains, marine life and desert.

It’s the tip of the iceberg.

Luckily I now have a website that I created to share our full experience: omanwanderlust.com. If our 2.5 years in Oman inspired you, please check it out.

We’re now half way through our summer. Half way We’re now half way through our summer. Half way between Oman and properly starting our new lives in the UK. I’m conscious that I’ve not yet said goodbye to Oman. It’s coming.

In the meantime I wanted to give some grid space to this awesome lot.

Every military spouse needs people in their lives who will listen to you moan, share belly laughs and understand the many complexities of marrying into the armed forces.

I don’t talk much about being a military family here so it’s fair that I’ve been asked: why we moved to Oman; why we chose to come back after 2.5 years; and why we chose to move to Swindon rather than back to our house in Devon. To be honest, people who know me personally ask these questions too šŸ˜†

Nothing is straight forward. Decisions have many angles and opportunities, amazing and challenging, but always guided by the job. Sometimes we don’t know what we’re doing from one month to the next. Plans can and do change at the very last minute.

It takes experience of this whirlwind life to properly get it. These thoroughly lovely ladies get it and, boy, have they put up with me moaning! They also know how to do a farewell bash in style!!

As well as the amazing opportunity to explore Oman, I’m grateful to our military life for introducing me to new friends from all walks of life. Experiences are always made better by sharing 🄰

Home is where your heart is. And Devon is one of t Home is where your heart is. And Devon is one of those places holding on to ours hard.

We’ve just spent a week on the north and south coasts getting over our international move and spending time with family.

We swam in the sea, ate pasties and pub teas, breathed in the country air and walked for miles and miles and miles.

It was a beautiful interlude before our shipping arrives from Oman. If our AirTags are correct, the container came into London docks yesterday.

Can’t wait to rummage through stuff we wished we’d gotten rid of eight weeks ago! šŸ˜†

PS Devon, we will be back soon!

šŸ’š On to new adventures šŸ’š The past week has šŸ’š On to new adventures šŸ’š

The past week has been a blur of boxes, form filling, key cutting, shopping for store cupboard basics and panic buying ā€˜UK clothes’.

But yesterday we stole ourselves away for a walk at White Horse Hill near our new home.

Fresh air and green views were just what we needed. And we managed half of our five mile hike without any moans!

Thank you to everyone who has been messaging with suggestions for things to do around the Wiltshire/Oxfordshire border. My inbox is overflowing - we’re going to be busy!

🐶 Dog is back šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ Now the whole family i 🐶 Dog is back šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

Now the whole family is in the UK I was going to share something heartfelt about our time in Oman. But from the number of DMs I got yesterday I need to do a pup-date šŸ˜†

When we moved to Oman in 2022 we flew Tin Box Dog direct with us from London to Muscat.

To be honest, we didn’t expect to have her with us when we returned two and a half years later 🄹

But she had other plans despite turning 14 this year.

So in April we began ā€˜operation fly dog back’, getting all her paperwork in order. Then at 11pm GMT on Tuesday she set off to Muscat airport with Mr Tin Box, armed with an Apple AirTag to let us follow her journey.

I shared live updates on my stories and had an overwhelming number of lovely messages. It was like she was riding a wave of goodwill.

And her journey went so much better than we could have hoped. In 22 hours she travelled through Qatar, Belgium and France via two planes, one pet taxi and the Channel Tunnel to reach us in southern England by 9.10pm on Wednesday.

A few people asked why we did it like this. The why is: the UK’s pet import rules mean Dog had to come via the EU. It was a faff but she is worth it!

Today she has been enjoying a much slower pace; making the most of carpeted floors, going on short sniffs/walks and scavenging for dropped morsels at a family barbecue.

Tomorrow she’ll have a whole new garden to explore as we head to our new home in Oxfordshire.
